narrated Screen capturing tools
These are the tools you want to use when you need to record a screen cast: a narration of a slide deck, a code demonstration, a tutorial of a website or program, or a full screen interaction. We have tried the tools below and can recommend them. Note that we cannot recommend Panopto's screen capture utility for either Windows or Mac as it forces full screen recording and has no mechanism for recording a portion of a screen. Also, it's start/stop/pause control is cumbersome.
The list below is not comprehensive and misses ome excellent tools, such as Camtasia. However, the tools listed below are simple to use and very inexpensive or free.

recommended stack: windows
For Windows we recommend SnagIt as it has the most control for audio source, webcam recording, and selecting full screen, windows, or portions. Also has a simple editor for video post production and easy start/stop/pause of recording. Capture videos and images. SnagIt is the little cousin of Camtasia.
